Contextual Fit

The Smith Family has asked us to design an addition to their home overlooking Long Island Sound. The existing house—an internationally recognized work designed in 1965 by architect Richard Meier—no longer fully meets their needs. While the owners want the new spaces to address their current lifestyle, they have emphasized that the addition must respect the character and architectural integrity of the original Meier design, yet still establish its own distinct identity.
This project centers on exploring how new three-dimensional forms, spatial hierarchies, and organizational systems can be composed in relation to an existing architectural work. The goal is to develop a design whose massing and formal logic respond harmoniously to the existing structure while asserting a clear, contemporary presence of its own.
Narrative
The Smith family has developed a strong interest in astronomy, night skies, and the visual beauty of stars. Over time, this fascination has become part of their family identity — something they enjoy together through stargazing, outdoor evenings, and shared curiosity. They want to incorporate their love of stars into the design of the home in a way that feels atmospheric, artistic, and connected to nature. The design should create a memorable experience of light, pattern, and sky.
